UBIQUITOUS

This website documents a month of sonic activity at South Square, Thornton, Bradford, UK, in August 2005.

From 5th until 28th, sonic artist Phill Harding presented a site-specific installation in the two rooms of the main gallery. Then—to mark the culmination of the proceedings—on the evening of the 26th, Phill brought in two collaborators, Bill Thompson [Austin TX via Aberdeen Scotland] and Patrick McGinley [Boston MA via London England] to participate in a performance event and roundtable discussion [chaired by curator Caroline Hick—herself an artist whose practice includes the use of sound].

“The nature of listening is the experience of hearing something and then realizing that you’re no longer hearing it and that you’re hearing something else. This is part and parcel of hearing. When you look at a painting, you don’t have the impression that the painting is disappearing. But as you listen to sounds, you have the impression that they’re gone, and that others have taken their place. And you’re brought right by paying attention to events in time. All you need to see is you’re brought into direct contact with ephemerality.” (John Cage, 1984)
